Curtain of Rain

The forest is alive. It breathes and transpires -
through the leaves of the trees that make it up.
During the day, the water it stores evaporates,
filling the overlying atmosphere with moisture.

This leads to condensation in ever-thicker clouds,
and sometimes even the formation of aerial rivers whose flow
can rival that of great terrestrial rivers such as the Amazon.

Once the threshold of gravity is crossed, the water droplets fall,
giving rise to light rain, to showers of varying intensity—
a downward current, materialized by curtains of rain.

Such is the natural water cycle, essential to life on Earth.
It is the outcome of a delicate balance between vegetation cover and the atmosphere,
a balance that is being threatened by global deforestation
as well as rising ocean and land temperatures.

These are followed by intense rainfall accompanied by floods,
scorching temperatures, and prolonged droughts.
