point Bruce Williams : "New light on relations between Early Egypt and Sudan" (Article en Anglais)

Relations between Egypt and the cultures of the Mediterranean world and Western Asia have long been a prominent theme of research. The splendor of Egyptian art and culture has inspired imitations, revivals, and adaptations down to present day. The inspiring grandeur was that of Egyptian culture in its maturity and old age, when the kingdom of the northern Nile was the senior of civilization of the ancient world and widely influenced its neighbors. However, Egypt's very magnificence has tended to overshadow the early phases of its emergence, and these periods have fared poorly in general treatments of Egyptian history. In fact, early Egypt has been considered the destination of verious influences from the north, east and west, rather than a point of origin. Scolarly and general accounts of Egypt tend to treat the northern Nile as an island in Africa, a "test tube" open to influences only at the northern end. When exchange occurred, ideas travelled primarily southwards. During the last generation, new evidence has come to light that could challenge such suppositions and create a much more complex and balanced picture of the relations between North and South during the period when Egypt developed. This evidence indicates that Egypt's settlement and economy were intensive and complex at a much earlier period than previously thought, that institutions of pharaonic Egypt can be traced into these early periods, that there were important centers deep in Sudan, and that the relationship between the two regions was strong enough for coherent pharaonic institutions to emerge south of Egypt ...

The identification of the birds frequently represented on predynastic Decorated pottery (Naqada IIC-D, about 3650-3300 cal BC), ostriches and flamingos, has always been a controversial issue. A reinvestigation of the available information indicates that they are basically ostriches. The elements supposed characteristic for the flamingo seem to be mainly the result of the stylised manner of drawing. The identification as ostriches is confirmed by a number of more detailed representations. However, eventually a deliberate mixture with characteristics of the flamingo can be supposed. Related words for dsr "flamingo", such as dsr.w "red" and "wrath" also refer to characteristics of the ostrich. As is suggested by early dynastic evidence, the ostrich was probably already during the predynastic period an important element of military and religious iconography. The possible iconographic relation between the ostrich and the flamingo leads to the early dynastic dsr-festival in which a boat played an important role. This in the end allows a link with the boats which are frequently depicted in combination with the birds on Decorated pottery. The birds and boats are therefore considered part of an elite iconography ... Read more

point Terence DuQuesne : "Milk of the Jackal : some reflexions on Hezat, Anubis and the imywt" (Article en Anglais)

The Jumilhac papyrus is a rich, indeed unique, source for the study of Egyptian religion. Composed under the Ptolemies, probably by one person, it recounts various aetiological myths which illustrate particular claims to divine associations for the little-known 17th and 18th nomes of Upper Egypt. One of the strangest and most interesting of these concerns the milk-goddess Hezat and the cult-object of Anubis known as the imywt. This emblem consists of a pole, set in a bucket, to which is attached an animal hide, probably that of a cow ...
